Today was the third day in a row for a run. I felt okay, not great, but I was determined to get in the 4-mile tempo run (6 miles total). And I almost made it. I think I need to modify my route, or maybe I just need to see it as a challenge and meet it head-on. I ran 3.8 miles at an 8-minute or better pace, but ascending that last hill on the way back was too much. I don't know how I can modify my route and not have hills around here, though. As I was running up that long hill I marked a spot up ahead where I would start walking, hoping it was around the cutoff point for my tempo. I ended up walking before that point, and soon discovered it still would have been over a tenth of a mile short. So much for judging the distance by sight.
I'm loving this warmer weather. Of course, it's supposed to be cold again on Saturday. I still count winter as not being over yet, and the way things go around here I won't be disappointed. Just looked at the schedule and it's just over four weeks to the race I want to run in April. Wow. That's quick. I definitely need to get in more speed work if I'm going to have any success at this race. I also think I'm going to modify my plan and treat it more as part of my overall training rather than running a race and taking off a week or two. There'll be less of a taper and more continuity beyond the race. At least that's what I'm thinking today. Guess I should pick another race to shoot for after this one.
