Mildness
It's been a nice week in Texas. Today's high was in the mid-60s, with some high clouds rolling in this afternoon. I see rain in the forecast for the weekend, but for now it's good. I did some leg exercises yesterday, and today felt good with both knees. I went 4 miles, trying to ratchet the mileage up slowly. Plus I really needed to get out and exercise after the relative gluttony of the past several days. I didn't gorge on tamales yesterday - but I could have. I think they're some of the best we've ever made.

Knee Skip
Skipped the Saturday run since I had some pain on the outside of my right knee Friday and Saturday. I went out today since it felt better but stayed at 3 miles. It felt okay but not 100% during the first mile, and my left knee also felt weak. I think I'm at that point where I need to get back to the leg strengthening exercises. I iced the right one afterward as a preventative measure and as of this evening it's not barking at me.
We did our Christmas celebration today since Daughter #2 has to work tomorrow. Got a new pair of running shorts, socks, and two short-sleeve shirts. Most of my running shirts are dark. These are white and lime-green which will help keep me cooler, or at least as much as possible here in Texas when summer rolls around again. Also got a new pair of sunglasses, and they are feather-light, fit nicely, and worked great on a sunny Christmas Eve.

Account Blow-Up
Went out this afternoon to pound the pavement after a work call on an account that was blowing up. It was about 50 degrees or slightly above, but chilly with a south wind. I went my 6 miles and the quickest pace was about 9:30/mile. Felt pretty good, and it was nice to get the run in before coming back to a full inbox and more conference calls.

December Chill
The cold has definitely seeped its way south and into Texas. We've been below freezing the past couple of nights and this one will be no different. It was in the upper 40s when I ran this afternoon, and at least the sun was out. I ran my 6 miles, and stayed to the eastern path on the way back so I could catch a little more sunlight. A little bit of a breeze from the north kept it nice and chilly for this December run.

Kidnapped
My run yesterday was sabotaged. My daughter and friends kidnapped me, under the pretext of going to brunch, and we ended up in New Braunfels instead at a Todd Snider concert. Plus some barbecue in Lockhart beforehand. What a day! By the time we got back this afternoon at 3:30 or so I was thinking I wouldn't get in a run. Instead, I decided that it was a nice enough day and with all the food I've eaten recently, including breakfast at Denny's at 12:30 a.m. after the concert, I needed it. So I ran 6 miles and it was actually a good run. Probably due to the carb loading from the midnight pancakes.

Brisk
I could have and should have run on Tuesday. We had an evening outing for work, and it was rainy and cool in the morning. I skipped it, though, and probably shouldn't have. At least our water was back on so I could have showered afterward.
Today was sunny but brisk with a somewhat stiff south wind. I went 6 miles. Felt kind of off my game yesterday and today, but this run helped me feel better. Likely I need more sunlight, as well as the exercise. Especially as the holidays draw closer.

Aw Yeah
Back to 6 miles today. That's my long run for the week, which seems a little sad since that has been my normal distance on any day of the week. After all the ups and downs of the past year I'm just glad to be running. If this is my long run for this point in time then that's okay.

Getting Out
Flew back from Austin this morning and got out for another 5-miler this afternoon. Saw about a half-dozen people on bikes, including a couple on a tandem. The only downside is that we have a water leak and had to shut off the water this morning. The plumber won't be here until tomorrow, which means I have to take a sponge bath. But I wasn't going to let that stop me from exercising.
Monday's Run
I ran on Monday afternoon since I was going to be out of town for a couple of days. It was a nice 5-miler. The hip pain I'd experienced on Sunday was non-existent. Nice to be back in the rhythm of running more than once a week.

Sleeping Through Rain
When I got up this morning after 9 the sun was shining. Apparently it was raining when The Wife got up and had stopped, which worked out well for me. The past few days, including Thanksgiving, were colder and wetter, so I didn't run on Thursday as planned. Today was nice, though. I ran 6 miles and it was nice to get back to my regular distance. I'll modify my schedule in the coming week to try and get in three runs since I'll be traveling. We'll see how that goes.

Before the Gluttony
I didn't even take my running gear with me to Kansas this past weekend. I knew it was going to be cold and busy with family time, so no reason to really try and shoehorn in a run. Today was warm, around 70 degrees, and a nice day for a pre-Thanksgiving outing. I ran 5 miles, all good and felt strong. My Garmin beeped at me about two hundred yards shy of the two-mile mark, which was odd. By the time I made it back to the start/finish line it was only about twenty yards off. I guess I can blame it on the wind and clouds. Or sunspots. Or whatever.

One More
Ran a mile more than I did on Monday, getting in 5 miles today. Too many work calls meant I didn't get out until 5 p.m. When I got home it was getting dark, so that was fun. The temperature was quite mild today, about 70 degrees, but as I write this the rain clouds have moved in and look to be around all day tomorrow. My decision to run earlier in the week seems to have paid off.

Four More
Supposedly bad weather is supposed to arrive on Thursday, and I decided to move my regular running days forward. Today I went out for 4 miles and felt pretty good. I had a bit of a stomach...irregularity but I made it back in time and no incidents occurred. Fortunately.

Back Pain
The day after my last post I hurt my back. Not sure how. I cleaned up the garage on that Sunday, and moved the smoker back onto the patio. Maybe the the moment when I yanked that big piece of thick steel was it, but didn't feel like it at the time. That night my lower back went into horrible spasms and I kept waking up. This was new since I've never had back problems before. The next was even worse and on that Tuesday morning I went to urgent care and walked out with prescriptions for pain and muscle relaxers. That seemed to help somewhat but it still took several days before I slept without waking up multiple times. Three weeks later I'm finally to the point where I could go out for a run.
I wanted to go out on Thursday but that was the point where I thought I was okay but realized it was probably best to wait a few more days. This morning I ate breakfast and had my coffee, and then went for a 3 miler. Considered doing another mile and realized I'm not trying to get a medal and that extra mile might actually do more harm than good. I feel good with what I did and will ease back into it over the next week. I've thought about all the gaps in my running over the last year - saving that for a post later - but glad to be back on the road today.

Waiting to Warm Up
How the times have changed. I waited until 11:30 this morning so that it was warm enough to run. The temperature was a few degrees south of 60 degrees, which isn't bad, but it's quite a dropoff from even a couple of weeks ago. I ran my 6 miles and then spent the day smoking ribs and pork, changing the calipers on my truck, and helping with a birthday. I'm tired.

A Day Early
Rain is in the forecast starting tonight and all day tomorrow. Human beings are nothing if not flexible, and I decided to run today even though that's two days in a row. At least this way I get in my run and don't have to try and fit it in between storms, if that's even going to be possible. I went the 6 miles again, but today it was a lot windier from the south, and so I walked up the big hill. Other than that it was good. My legs weren't quite as fresh but that's to be expected. Tomorrow will be a workout I can do in the garage and then hopefully the rain clears out so I can run on Saturday as planned.

Wrong Address
It was a perfect Fall day with sunshine and no wind, temperature in the 70s. I ran my 6 miles without stopping, even going up the big hill. I did get passed twice, which is kind of rare because there usually aren't that many people out. First was by a young lady right before mile one, and then a guy later on after mile four. Oh well, I wasn't going for speed. At least then.
A UPS driver dropped off a package on our doorstep mid-afternoon. Right house number, wrong street. So when I got back from my run, I came inside, grabbed it off my desk, and ran it around the block. It probably added another third of a mile to my run overall. On the way back I cranked up the speed a little bit, and it felt good. It's been a while since I've run anything close to fast. It was nice to stretch out a little bit.

Fall Day
Back to the routine today with some punching of the bag and a 2-mile run to follow up. The sun is lower and the temperature was definitely fall like. That's after a couple of big fronts came through last night and spun up some tornadoes in Dallas. Nothing like life in the south/midwest.

Back to It
Took over a week off due to guys' weekend and other stuff. This morning I remembered that it's a half-marathon day on the path I normally run, and after being off so long I didn't want to do an alternate route with hills. So I waited until 11 a.m. and ran in some nice sunshine with temperature in the mid 70s. Nice outing, felt good, and walked up the big hill. It's nice to be back to it, and my plan is to work on getting back into shape after the short respite.

Up and Down
The weather has been up and down this past week temperature-wise, and today was a little odd. This morning we had a light rain, clouds through most of the morning, but sun breaking through to warm us up on its way to 90 degrees for a high. Then tomorrow's high will be 60 after a cold front passes through. I decided to run late morning in order to avoid the heat, settling for a little humidity from the rain. I think it was a good decision since I ran 6 miles without walking other than the big hill. A little more sweat than Tuesday's run but overall a good run.

Morning Outing
My schedule today allowed me to exercise and do my 2-mile run earlier in the day, which is goo because the Cardinals play at 4 this afternoon. It's the final of the five-game series and I plan to pay attention.

A Difference
80 degrees at run time today, and what a difference it made. No walking at every mile marker, and a lot less humidity as well. My shirt wasn't completely saturated when I got home, which seems like a foreign concept after the long summer. I went my 6 miles and it was all good. I did walk up the hill in front of the school, and it's supposed to get back up to 90 on Thursday before the temperature plummets over the weekend.

Last Hot Run?
Another October run in 90+ degree heat, plus the ever-present humidity. It looks like the summer wave finally breaks at the end of the weekend and we're into the 80s for highs next week. I ran 6 miles and did the usual walking every mile. As much as I love the hot weather I have to admit it will be nice to run without breaks, and hopefully this winter I can actually run, as opposed to last year when I had a strained abdomen that sidelined me for several months.

Nooner
I knew my parents were coming in late this afternoon when I would normally exercise and run, so I did my thing at noon today. It was still in the low 90s and of course the sun was directly overhead, but relatively speaking it wasn't as bad as say...July. A nice easy 2 miles.
Back at Six
Yesterday was a really good 6-mile run along my normal course. Even though it was 94 degrees (on October 1st) and I walked every mile, I felt strong and maintained a consistent pace the whole time. Lots of sunlight but overall what I would consider one of my better outings in recent times.
Monday, September 30, 2019
Still Summer
Up to about 93 degrees today and it still feels like summer on the last day of September. Relatively speaking my 2-mile run wasn't unbearable. The sun is a little lower and there was more of a breeze once I turned around. Also wore brand-new shoes and they were a wee bit too tight. I couldn't have gone for a regular run without doing some loosening up and getting them to feel right.
Another Tardy Post
When I left the house on Saturday I heard a voice over a loudspeaker from the direction of the nearby high school and figured there was a race of some kind going on. I ran over there and was correct, so I decided to go the hill route instead. Not sure if that was the wise choice since it was so humid, but I did it anyway. There was plenty of walking up the big hills and a couple of other walk breaks, and I think I came in at around 5.7 miles. Not the usual tally for a long run but then again I wasn't expecting to do hill work.
Sucking at Posting These
Got back from Austin last Thursday afternoon and went for a run. It wasn't great but at least I got out and did my 6 miles. Still pretty warm here in Texas toward the end of September but I'll take it. Still way better than training in single digit temperatures.

Soupy with a Touch of Clouds
Mostly clouds during the 7 miles this morning, and lots of humidity. I didn't walk until mile markers 5 & 6 and then up the big hill, so overall it was a decent run. Lots of people out on bikes or walking their dogs. There were also several crews picking up trash for a community day, but looked like they were doing more exploring than picking up since the park is pretty clean.

Relative Coolness
Temperature dipped below 80 degrees for the high today, with clouds and threat of rain. In fact it sprinkled on me a little between miles 2 and 3, but not enough to make me turn around. I ran all 6 miles without any breaks, including up the big hill. Come to think of it, I ran up the hill on Tuesday as well even though it was a shorter run.
Another Two
Yesterday was a good outing, hot again but not as hot as it's been for 2 miles. On the way back a mom was standing in a driveway by a car with her son and daughter, he about 7 or 8 and she 3-4. As I ran past the little girl said, "Hi!" in a bright cheery voice. I responded in like manner, and she said, "What are you doing?" I replied, "Running and sweating!" The mom got a good laugh out of that one.

Four Late
Went to the office today and happy hour afterward, which means I got home late. I held myself to one beer so I could get out for a run, and even though it was tempting to chill I still got out for 4 miles a little after 7 p.m. It's already starting to get dark earlier each evening, so by the time I got home at 8 the sun was well down. Regardless, I got in some running in spite of the long day.

Last Hottest Day?
Today my 2-miler was in 94 degree weather, which didn't seem that bad. Could be that the temperature is coming down slowly, at least according to the forecast, and our upper 90s days could be behind us.
Hotter than It Says
On Saturday morning I thought it would be a nice day for a run. The weather app said it was 72 degrees and felt like 72 degrees.
It lied.
In the sunshine it was easily 80 degrees, and the humidity made it feel about 10 degrees warmer. Fortunately I believed how it felt outside as opposed to my lying eyes. I walked each mile marker and sought the shade during my 7 miles. Once again my strategy worked. We might be getting to the end of summer here in the last half of September, but I'll wait to see for myself.

Game Day
I listened to the Cardinals-Rockies game yesterday when running, first time with AirPods. The heat was back on with some decent humidity but also a nice breeze from the southeast. The Cards tried to lose the game but held them off in the 8th inning and then exploded for 4 insurance runs in the 9th. It was a nice change from the usual podcast or music, but also a little bit stressful. I went my usual 6 miles with the necessary walk breaks. In another couple of weeks it should start cooling down to where I can run without the interruptions.

Good Workout
Good workout today on the punching bag - worked up a really good sweat. I ran the 2 miles afterward and felt a little off in my hips when I first started, but that lessened as I got going. Still in the 90s for the temperature, the last gasp of summer.
Tuesday, September 10, 2019
Still in the 90s
With a temperature of 93 degrees at runtime it felt much cooler but not cool enough to run without walking. Plus there was a nice breeze out of the southeast that helped. I didn't give in to the temptation and again it paid off. I went 6 miles at a nice slow pace.
The other thing that I've noticed before and again today was how much the wind throws off the GPS. The first mile was way past the usual mark, and my run ended up being .06 miles off. Maybe I should research the effect of wind on GPS readings.

A Nice Fall Day
It was only 93 degrees when I went out for a 2-miler this evening. It felt absolutely fall-like with a nice breeze. Maybe it's that the sun is getting lower and into autumn mode. Whatever, that ten degrees of coolness makes a difference.

Run and Bathe and Shower
The weather app said it was 72 degrees when I left this morning at 8 a.m. It might have been right, but the humidity was off the charts. It felt like I was in an extremely warm bath. I ran 7 miles, and despite the supposed temperature knew early on that I should walk every mile. I didn't feel like I was straining at any point but it also wasn't the easiest run ever. The shower later on was quite the opposite, but that's because I cranked down the handle. Who knew that cold showers would feel that good?

Back At It
Back to running today after a trip to St. Louis for a few ball games. It's definitely still summer with a temperature of 97 degrees this afternoon. I went the usual 6 miles and walked at the markers. Humidity seemed to be down just slightly but still managed to sweat a lot. I felt good overall.
Sunday, September 1, 2019
Back to 8
Yesterday morning was in the low 70s and cloudy. Low clouds off to the east and a couple of very distant lightning flashes gave me a little pause, but the storm stayed on that side of the metro area. I went a full 8 miles with no walking, which is pretty amazing considering the pattern I've been doing this summer. I felt good the whole way, and glad to be back up to this level of mileage. The Wife and I went to downtown in the afternoon to tour the art museum and we happened into some barbecue on the way back. A good day, indeed.
Walk Run
It was 96 degrees on Thursday, and actually didn't feel too bad with the breeze. I opted to walk at every mile marker along the 6-mile route, which was the wise choice. As I said about yesterday's run, it's not too bad to be in August and below 100 degrees.
Another Cool One
And by cool I mean it was only 93 degrees when I ran my 2 miles. End of August, can't complain about that.
Tuesday, August 27, 2019
A Difference
A band of thunderstorms moved through in the early morning hours and it stayed cloudy most of the day. That made a difference of about 20 degrees in temperature from yesterday's short outing. It was still humid, of course, so I walked each mile marker except the fifth, saving that one for the big hill. It was a good run, feeling pretty strong, and enjoying the somewhat cooler day even though the sun came out for my run. Hoping to stay healthy so I can run through the cooler weather in the next several months, not that I'm saying it's going to be cooler yet.
102 + 2
Monday's 2-miler was in 102 degree temperature. It might be the last 100+ day of the year, but we'll see. The breeze felt only mildly like a furnace.
Monday, August 26, 2019
Saturday Outing
Saturday morning was marginally cooler, only in the low 80s when I went out, but humidity was high as usual. I parlayed the temperature into running 7 miles and the first 4.5 without a walk. Then I walked again at 5.5 and 6 before doing the same up the big hill. I was pleased with the outing, especially since this was my only real run of distance during the week. This coming week should be better in that regard, and the temperature is supposed to drop a little.
Monday, August 19, 2019
Avoiding Bikes
Went for a 6-miler on Saturday and feels like I spent a lot of time avoiding bicyclists. It was a typical Texas morning with sunshine and humidity, but overall a good run. Especially since I missed running on Thursday due to a packed schedule. This coming week will also be messed up due to travel. Oh well, guess it gives me time to rejuvenate a little from the heat.
Tuesday, August 13, 2019
100 plus 5
Today I thought about going my regular route, but then decided 5 miles was good and the extra mile wasn't worth it. Especially since the temp was pegged at 100 degrees. I did my usual walk every mile, and then the sun went behind some clouds in the middle. That was good, but then it came back out for the last mile. Overall a good run in the dog days of summer.
101 plus 2
Worked out in the garage yesterday and then ran 2 miles. The temp was 101 degrees. Actually not a bad run since the humidity was somewhat lower. I'll take it.
Saturday, August 10, 2019
Mental Walk
This morning the temperature wasn't horrible, and the breeze from the south was decent enough. I went 6 miles in total, but walked the last two. And it wasn't because I couldn't run, but my brain just decided I was done and a walk would be nice. It was a draining week at work and I think at mile four my brain said let's just stop running and relax. I kept considering that I should start up again, but for whatever reason I never did. Kind of weird, but in hindsight kind of good. I'm not going to beat myself up for walking instead of running on a hot day after a long week.
Thursday, August 8, 2019
Longer Today and Hotter
Again a Texas summer day, 6 miles, and a breeze from the southeast. I walked a minute at each mile for the first four, then three minutes at mile five, then the big hill. The last mile wasn't great but overall it went okay.
Wednesday, August 7, 2019
Hotter but Better
Today's temperature at 6 p.m. was 99 degrees, but it actually felt better for today's 2 miles. That's because the humidity was slightly less than yesterday, and a breeze also blew out of the southeast. I know it wasn't as far and that's good all by itself, but the little bit of difference in the two factors other than heat worked in my favor.
Tuesday, August 6, 2019
The Heater is On
We're at 100 degree weather for the next week. I love the heat, but it does mean more walking when I'm on a run. Today it really wasn't that bad, or at least that's what the weather app said. We had some clouds in the afternoon and it was 93 and sunny when I went out. However, the humidity had spiked. I walked at each mile for the first three, and then as needed on the way back, which means a couple of walks per mile. I did the usual 6 miles and took advantage of the shade where I could.
Hot Run
The temperature was about 100 degrees when I went out for my 2 miles yesterday after a punching bag workout. That was at about 6 p.m. Gotta love Texas!

Rain and a Day of Rest
Yesterday was messed up with rain in the morning followed by family commitments. This morning started off the same way. About mid-day the rain moved out and I got to run. I went 7 miles Even though the mercury started to move up I managed it with a walk every mile. Plus the humidity was high with a couple of days of rain, but even so it was still a good run. I've had worse.
Thursday, August 1, 2019
Help from Clouds
The temp was in the 90s again today, but it didn't feel that bad when I started since there were some high clouds. I went 6 miles total and 4.5 without walking before the sun started peeking out. Of course the humidity was high, and from that point I walked at 4.5, 5, and up the big hill. Lots of sweat but overall a good run.
Wednesday, July 31, 2019
Quick 2
It was 99 again today, but at least it was only 2 miles after the punching bag. I think this is a good combination since my legs have been moving around a lot during the workout, and then I go for a run on legs that aren't fresh. I usually feel it early in the run, mainly because there's a slight incline. But after that I settle in to an easy run that's probably a little faster than my usual outings because I'm not going as far. I think I'll keep this up for the foreseeable future.

6 in 99
Ran my 6 miles today in 99 degree heat. No clouds, lots of sun. And walking every mile marker, with a little extra before miles 4 and 5. In the end, though, it was a good run. Not many people out, surprise surprise. As the summer wears on I'm getting more acclimated to the heat. And staying smart with walking when and where needed.

Too More
Another round of the punching bag followed by a 2-mile run. It was starting to rain a little when I left but quickly stopped and left behind plenty of humidity. Good run, though. I'm doing these short runs without GPS or music, and that's a refreshing change of pace as well.
Saturday, July 27, 2019
Continuous Run
This morning the temperature was 72 degrees and I thought I would try and run without stopping. The humidity was not horrible, but still present. I went 7 miles total, and it was over 6.5 miles before I walked up the big hill. That feels like the longest I've run without stopping for a while. Nice to know it can still be done.

Bicycles and Not Much Else
Today was pretty mild for Texas in July, but I saw bicyclists, a couple walking, and nobody else running. Kind of weird because this - 85 degrees - should be a great day for runners. And it was. I went my 6 miles and did the same as the other day: a minute walk at each of the first three mile markers, and then running all of the second half except up the hill. I took advantage of the nice day and southeasterly breeze. Surprised that more people didn't do the same.
Wednesday, July 24, 2019
Two Too
Did another round with the punching bag today and then ran 2 miles. Today I got smarter and wore my socks and shoes (usually I do it barefoot) while I made the punching bag cry, and then I was right out the door. Another good run, and feeling better as the week goes along.
Tuesday, July 23, 2019
Fall is in the Air
Not really. It's only July. But 90 degrees today with lower humidity, as opposed to 99 degrees and a heat index over 110, really did feel a lot different. I ran my 6-mile route and chose to walk at the end of each of the first three miles. I decided early on that if I felt okay at the halfway point I would run back all the way (except for the big hill) without stopping, and that's what I did. Overall a really good run, lots of thoughts running through my head mostly about work, but good for the body and mind both.
Short Monday
Yesterday I decided to kickstart some fitness (and maybe a little weight loss) with a punching bag workout and then 2 miles. Felt like I ran faster than normal. Probably because I deliberately chose a flatter route to the west than my normal one to the east. Overall it felt good and hopefully a nice beginning to better living.

Another Sweaty Run
I went out yesterday morning, hoping that the marginally reduced temperature would be helpful. Not so much. Friday had seen humidity below 50% but again, not so on Saturday morning. I went 6 miles and could tell by the amount of sweat after the first half-mile that my hopes for lower humidity were not to be. I walked at each mile marker until mile four, and then every half-mile after that. I feel good, though, that I'm getting out and exercising even in the heat. As I explained to a friend, I'm not training for anything and have learned that walking is okay in this type of weather. I wish I'd been able to run on Thursday but between work and going to a concert it just didn't happen. This week should get me back on track.

Scorcher
Depending on what web site you checked it was either 101, 98, or 95 degrees when I headed out. Regardless, the heat index was well above 100. I went 6 miles, and did a lot of walking. I ran the first mile, then every half mile after that, until the fifth mile where I walked a good portion of it. Then I ran probably 3/4 of the last mile. I sweated a lot, but hey, if I didn't that would be a problem. The walking helped me keep my heart rate and core temperature manageable.

Routine
Was out of town this week on a business trip and today's run should be the start of getting back into my regular routine. I went 6 miles with a walk at each marker, just like usual. The temperature was in the mid 70s when I started and seemed to rise quickly, with humidity included. Overall it was a good run and it will be nice to (hopefully) be uninterrupted for a while on my normal days.

Saturday Morning's All Right for Running
Got up and out the door by a little after eight this morning. I figured the humidity couldn't be much higher in the morning than it is in the evening these days, and I was right. The marginally cooler temperature was nice, as was the shade from the trees on the east side of the route. I went 7 miles, with a walk at each mile marker for a minute, and two minutes each at miles 5 and 6. Got in some good sweat and glad to be running with no restrictions other than the weather.

Back from the Beach
Spent the last couple of days at the beach in Florida, and several before that in Atlanta. Back home for Independence Day and back to working out, which I didn't even attempt to do while away since there was too much going on. This is normal Texas weather, with morning temperature in the mid 80s and heat index in the 90s. I ran 6 miles on my regular route with a walk at every mile marker. Lots of sweat in all the humidity, but was also glad to see plenty of other people out on this holiday. Considering it's been about ten days since my last run I can say that it went pretty well and I'm pleased to be back at it.

Waste of a Shower
I had a good 5-mile run this afternoon in 90 degree heat in a sauna of humidity. After cooling off and eating dinner I took a shower. That turned out to be a waste since I had to clean a broken mirror out of the garage (long story) and get it into the bin for tomorrow's pick up, sweating buckets the whole time. So much for that shower. Again, just part of summer in Texas.

Wet Saturday
Saturday was wet but not because it was raining, it was all about the humidity. Plus hot temperatures in the 80s on a Saturday. I went 6 miles but just like the previous run there was a lot of walking in the last couple of miles. My take is that at least I'm getting out there and sweating. I feel like I'm still acclimating to the hot temperatures since our spring was pretty mild.
Hot Walking
Thursday was in the 90s for the temperature, and very sunny. The humidity was off the charts and my weather app showed a heat index of 114 degrees. That might be a little over the top but maybe not as much as I originally thought. I got out a little after 4:30 p.m. and wisely decided to go just 4 miles. Even so there was a lot of walking in that last mile, probably overall a half-mile for the whole outing. I still sweat plenty so there's that.

Summertime
Back to the regular route today, and regular summer temperatures. It was in the low 90s with lots of humidity. I ran my 6 miles with a walk at each marker. It was also a little breezy from the south, which usually affects the GPS. It was off quite a bit today, about 100 yards at least on the first mile marker, and when I got to mile 3 I went by the regular natural markers that I know and ignored the GPS. It's amazing how much the wind will change the readings, but by now I think I've figured it out.

A Hill or Two
The usual route takes me to a lake and a park, and today the city was scheduled to dedicate the new additions: more trails, new playground, and new amphitheater (I think). So I avoided that scene and for the first time in a long time ran the hill route to the west.
This being a Saturday morning it was humid but not too bad as far as the temperature goes. It's my long run day, but with the hills I kept it to 6 miles, which was just about right. Overall I felt pretty good, although as I came back onto Ridge I walked up the curved sidewalk to the road, and then walked again up the huge hill on Virginia. The first was because I felt like I need to, and the second was more for injury prevention. There was a good wind out of the southwest and that definitely helped keep me cool enough for this outing.

No Bobcat
Ran the regular route today and saw no bobcats. Which is good. The 6 miles went well, with a minute walk every mile marker because of the sun and heat. Even though the heat wasn't bad, in the mid 80s, I was sick late Tuesday and half of yesterday so I thought it prudent to walk occasionally and it proved to be the right choice.

Bobcat
Didn't feel good most of the day yesterday. My throat was a little congested and I felt like I was catching some of the cough The Boy has had recently. But since it was all neck up I went and ran 6 miles. And actually felt pretty good at the end.
As I got to the end of the north side of the bridge on Lake Forest I saw a bobcat down below. It was right at the edge of the grass where the concrete fans out, picking at something. I stopped and watched it for about 90 seconds. I coughed once and it looked up, determined I wasn't a threat, and then went right back to pawing at the grass. I finally continued and as I looked back it had started to walk into the trees, but stopped for a moment to watch me before continuing. I'm wondering what it survives on in this area. Must be a lot of squirrels in its diet. Anyway, I ran my whole 6 miles, and wondered if that bobcat was watching me from the woods as I ran by the area where I'd seen it.
Later on as I was heading upstairs for bed I got the chills and the coughing got worse. I ended up sleeping late and when I finally got up at noon it had broken. It's been about three and a half years since last time I was sick, which means I can't complain about a sickness that lasts less than a day.

Humidity in the Air
The sky was overcast yesterday afternoon, and the breeze out of the south helped, but the humidity was way up and temperature was about 90. I thought about trying to run the whole way, but knowing my Achilles' heel is humidity I decided to walk at each mile marker along the 6-mile route. Plus I knew I was going to mow the lawn when I got home, which gave me more incentive to avoid overdoing it. In spite of the humidity it was a good run.

Back to 7
Got up early this Saturday morning -well, at 7:15, which seemed early - and ran 7 miles. Heading to Oklahoma today for a concert with Old 97's and wanted to run before heading north. It was a nice 70 degrees, sunny, and lots of people out on a beautiful morning. I wore the compression shirt once again and that seemed to help. It was great to get back to a little bit of a longer outing.

Sweating with the Oldies
Well, the oldie on this run was me, but I went 6 miles. It was in the mid 80s and high humidity after a lot of rain the past couple of days. It was nice to do a normal run on my normal route, though. I added K-Tape to my abdomen for today's outing but left the compression shirt at home. I might use it on Saturday. I feel the dullest of aches on that side, which tells me there's something lingering there that I don't want to re-injure. I'm doing my best to try and stay fit while not hurting myself to the point of having to take time off again.

Out for 5
This was the first time in modern remembrance where I ran without KT Tape or a compression shirt. I was feeling good, did some pushups this morning, and was ready to run after work. I went 5 miles and afterward still felt good enough to mow the back lawn. As always the acid test will be how it feels tomorrow. At his point I think I should be okay. Even though there were a couple of times it seemed like the lower abdomen was throwing warnings at me it still feels okay tonight.

Busy Morning
I had a lot going on this morning and debated about running today versus tomorrow. I had a brisket to trim, rub, and put on the smoker. Also needed to run to the store real quick, as well as eat breakfast. I did all those in fairly short order and figured it was best to get in a run today. I ran 6, and the last 1.25 was probably about half walking. Up until then it was fine, but I should have walked earlier than the turnaround at mile three. It was warm, windy, and I realized I was dehydrated. Lesson learned.
By the way - the brisket turned out to be the best I've ever made.

The 90 Degrees Angle
Flew back home this morning and made it back by mid-afternoon. The temp was right at 90 degrees with a stiff breeze out of the south. I decided 5 miles was good for today and then I can add an extra mile or two on Saturday for a longer run. Still feeling good, and today was the first day that it took several hours after waking before I realized it's the first time I wasn't feeling any pain in my rib area. It was a nice feeling.
Saturday in the Park
Made it back up to 6 miles last Saturday. I felt good, listened to a podcast, and all around just had a good run. It's nice to be back and (hopefully) past all the injuries. I missed my Tuesday run due to being in Vegas for work. My schedule was too packed. Plus it's also not a good place to run, at least when you're staying on the strip.

Five More
Another nice sunny day, with temperature in the mid 80s. I ran 5 miles, feeling good. The past few times I've felt like I had fresh legs due to the restricted running of the past several months, and today they felt fine still but overall I was a little lethargic. Or at least that's how I perceived it until I realized my pace was still in the 10 minute/mile range. That won't last once it gets ten degrees warmer and summer really kicks in.

Sun Run
Weather is back to Texas normal today and temperature is in the low 80s. I ran 5 miles in the sun and it felt nice. The only walk was up the big hill, but other than that I kept a pretty decent pace at or just below 10 minutes/mile. Not bad for a day a bit warmer than the previous couple of weeks.

A Rainy Saturday
I waited and waited today for the rain to move out. Tomorrow is Mother's Day and The Youngest needed to go downtown to roam and search for a gift. I took her and settled in at the pub for a couple of pints, and by the time we left the weather had improved. When we got home it was still cloudy but no longer threatening. I wore my compression shirt again and went 6 miles this time. Overall I'm feeling good still, and I think the shirt is helping. At a couple of points, especially the beginning, my abdomen felt tender. I was thinking of how it's been over six months with that particular issue, and we'll see how it feels tomorrow.

Wrapped Up
The temperature today was outstanding for a run, in the low 60s. I decided to wear my compression shirt to help out with the bruised ribs. I think it helped, at least so far, since I ran 5 miles with no ill effects. There was a nice northerly breeze which also helped, and I ran up the big hill. All in all not a bad run. As with every run over the last six weeks or so the acid test will be how it feels tomorrow.

Lunch Outing
I had some time to run at lunch today so I did. Went 4 miles and still feeling good. My left pec is feeling sore, of all things, but I don't think that's because of running. I don't know what it is, other than the lingering effects of the scooter incident.
Also, I ordered new shoes on Sunday and the UPS driver dropped them off about 10 minutes before I was going out. Talk about perfect timing! It was nice to run with shiny new shoes.

Adding On
As I mentioned a few days ago I added on an extra mile to make it a 4-miler. My worry is the rib cage, but so far so good. My legs feel fine and I could have gone longer, but I'm trying to be smart. This time. Which has not always been the case, apparently.

Another One
Back home after a trip to Austin and ran another 3-miler today. Still feeling good and thinking I might add another mile on Saturday. We'll see what the weather is like.

Running Home
Went to the eye doctor for a follow-up exam this afternoon and it took way too long so I left. I had my wife drop me off so I could run home, which I did. Once more I did 3 miles and this time I feel like I'm almost back to normal. It was a good run, and I feel stronger than I have in weeks. I'd say I'm about 90% now and a few more days will get me all the way. back.

Rising Above Stupid
This morning we went and saw the last installment of the Avengers, or at the least the current incarnation of it, which left me some time this afternoon to run. I've suffered no ill effects from Thursday's outing, which led me to do the exact same today. I ran 3 miles, in 80 degree heat, but it was a good run and afterward still feel no pain. My plan is to ramp up slowly. On the good news side of things, I've sneezed about five times today without feeling like my rib cage was going to explode outward. Maybe I've finally moved past stupid.

Still Stupid
About that last run...yeah, I regret that one. It put me on the shelf for two weeks. After that outing, where I ran too far while injured, my ribs took a couple of steps back on the healing front. In fact, maybe more. We've all had that feeling where a ligament, maybe elbow, knee, or hip, pops over a joint and you know that's not natural. I had that feeling in my upper left chest, where - get this - there's not a joint. That went on for several days and finally went away after about 5-6 days. The other problem was sneezing. Even as late as Monday of this week I started to sneeze, stifled it, and still felt like I blew a gasket. It's only yesterday and today where I woke up without pain.
It's been beautiful (other than rain all day yesterday) and I felt it was time to get out for at least a walk and maybe a run. Today I set out running and felt fine. I decided 3 miles was the limit, and that went well, at least at the time. My right side is a little sore, but we'll see how it feels tomorrow. This was my first time without K-Tape on my abdomen or ribs in a few months. We'll see if my next post is about how I'm beyond stupid.
Thursday, April 11, 2019
Still Painful
Today was cooler, in the upper 60s, but it was a painful 6 miles. My rib cage is still tender, but I figured since you don't run with your ribs it would be fine. It wasn't, but not so much so that I regret doing it. I needed to get out and run, and I'm sure I'll be better for it long-term. My ribs are at about 80% but that last 20% is a bear.

I Am a Idiot
Ran 4 miles today, first in what? Ten days? All because I am a idiot. Not an idiot. A idiot.
So last week I went with some friends to St. Louis for Opening Day. Fun time, lots of sights, food, and drink. On Wednesday three of us each rented a scooter and went from downtown to our bnb in Soulard. That went fine and was actually pretty fun. Then we went from there to Anheuser Busch for a brewery tour, also good. Over the next couple of days we used them periodically when available, and on Thursday night I was heading to where the gang was hanging out. As I veered off the street onto the sidewalk one of the big concrete squares was missing and I took a nice spill. Hurt my ribs pretty good and it's taken several days to get to the point where I'm not in pain all the time. Still can't sneeze but figured I was about 75% today.
Therefore I ran (slowly) and stayed upright (posture) and made it the 4 miles. It was also 92 degrees, quite a jump up the ol' thermometer. I walked every mile and that made it doable. We'll see if all that jostling was good for me or not. I know the sweating was definitely good.

Blown Away
Today's run went much better than the last, mainly due to the fact I didn't scarf down a double bacon cheeseburger with a fried egg on it. In fact, this was a really good one since I went 7 miles. I actually had to layer up because there is a horrible northwest wind of about 25 mph, knocking the actual feel down into the low 40s. I felt the elusive runner's high a couple of times, believe it or not, both times as I was heading north after the turnaround. I think it was because I relaxed and just tried to not struggle or push too hard against the wind. All in all a good day and a nice long run in spite of the weird weather.

Big Burger
I ate a big burger from Baker's at lunch and paid for it on my run yesterday. I don't regret the hamburger and onion rings because they were great, but I felt slow and bloated for my 6-miler. I walked for a minute at the halfway point and then again up the big hill. Otherwise I slogged through it and ran the rest of the way. I suppose it was my way of trying to atone for the gluttony. The wind was pretty stiff out of the south, which helped because the temperature seemed warm with the sun and in the 70s.

Back to Normal Distance
Today marked my first 6-miler on a weekday in about five months. It was a gorgeous spring day, sunny and a little breeze out of the north. Still feeling good, although a little tired after all the home improvement projects of the last couple of weeks. Nevertheless my pace was about 10 minutes/mile, which is pretty good as I build back to the point where I can do long runs on the weekends again.

Between the Storms
Today was one of those days where it's windy, cooler, and storms are definitely scattered. But it was an excellent day because I made it back up to 6 miles. I listened to a Spanish lesson and then some music along the way. It felt nice, almost routine, to run my normal route without worry. Even with all the extracurricular activities, like moving almost two tons of rock and materiel over the past week, I still feel good.
I think back to what might have caused the injury in the first place. I wonder if it was when I was replacing the front brakes on my truck up in Kansas, and maybe strained too much trying to loosen some bolts. I don't know. Not even sure if the timing works out. Whatever the case I'm going to do my best to not have to go through this again. I don't do well with taking it easy for such a long period of time.

Midday Run
Was going to head out before lunch but realized the electrician was on his way, so I went ahead and ate and then ran. It's a nice sunny day with a slight breeze out of the north, about 70 degrees. I ran 5.5 miles, the first time I've been in that part of the park to the east since November. I'm still feeling good and continuing to build the mileage. I wanted to get in today's run early since I have some yard work to do later.

Making a Path
I planned to run 5.5 miles on Saturday but that didn't work out. I spent the morning at Lowe's getting all the material to make a path along the side of the house to the shed, and then spent the afternoon making the path. By the time I finished it was about six in the evening and I was well beyond spent.
Fast forward to today and I went 5 miles. The temperature was up to 70 degrees with a nice breeze, and I ran the whole way without walking. I'm almost back to 100%, probably 90%, and feeling no ill effects from the run or the push-ups I've started doing again. I also have been doing leg exercises on the off days so that my knees and hips don't feel so wobbly.

Stiff Breeze
Yesterday afternoon I had a brief window of time to run before a work call, so I got out the door and hustled to make it back by 4:30 p.m. I ran 5 miles, which I'm feeling fine so far as I ramp up the mileage incrementally, and pace was under 10 minutes/mile. And then when I walked back in to sit down for the meeting I found it was moved to today. Oh well. At least the run felt good.

Building Miles
Yesterday I walked out the door in shorts and a long-sleeved technical t-shirt. I made it about 10 yards down the sidewalk and walked right back in. It was a little cooler and windier than it appeared through the front windows, so I changed into long pants. Glad I did.
I ran 4.5 miles and felt good about it. With the cooler temp I was able to run the whole way, which was great since I'm still building up my mileage again. This will be the first week in several where I can run three times and hope to keep the momentum going.

Back from Florida
Went to Florida on Wednesday for work meetings on Thursday and stayed for my first Spring Training game on Friday. All of which meant I didn't get to run due to the packed schedule. I did read my new Runner's World issue on the plane, which I guess means I did something related to running.
Today I went out for a 5-miler. It was 75 degrees and felt way warmer than it actually was. It was also extremely windy after a storm blew through before my plane got home. I walked a tenth of a mile at each marker starting with the second mile to combat the heat and my excesses yesterday evening in Florida. Plus today is the )*#$! time change, which I hate. Time to go to bed.

Another Cold Run
Today the temperature got up to the 40s, at least, but it was still not warm. I took the opportunity to add another half-mile to my total to get to 4.5 miles for the day. I'm off for another business trip and another skipped run on Thursday, but I should be back in plenty of time to run on Saturday. Added bonus: it's supposed to be much warmer. *fingers crossed* Maybe winter is finally behind us.

Milestone
Today was a big milestone in my running life. It wasn't the longest or fastest I've run. It was the first time I've run without walking since mid-November. Since I was in the Bay Area this past week and it rained pretty much the whole time, I didn't have any outings since last weekend. Today I went 4 miles. No pain, no pushing it too hard. I feel good later in the day after spending the afternoon painting the garage. I hope this is the first step toward getting back to my regular routine, but as always I'm not going to ramp up too fast. Nice and easy seems to be working so far.

A Windy One
Gotta love Texas weather. Most of the week it was cold and raining. Today was high winds and a temperature near 70 degrees. I didn't mind the wind too much. I went a total of 5 miles, running 4.25 out of that total. Still feeling good, and my side's not hurting. I also replaced two outdoor light fixtures and mowed for the first time this year. All in all a productive day.

Out for a Birthday
The past few days it's been cold and raining. Today it was much nicer, plus it was also my birthday. I did my normal 4-mile routine, which means I actually ran 3.5 miles. My side is feeling much better, with almost no noticeable pain or twinges during the day or even at night when I turn over. That's a great improvement over even a month ago. I'm hopeful that this gradual return to activity will pay off. Some people would say that it sucks to get old, but my goal is to be active for many years to come.

Incremental Addition
I didn't run Thursday because I had to get up at 4 in the freaking morning to go to the airport. Today was cool and and grey, but actually not bad running weather. I upped the overall mileage to five, of which 4 was running. I did an eighth of a mile each interval and walked the rest. Still feeling pretty good, and my side is less and less noticeable as far as any aches or hindrance. I'm still not to the point yet of going all out for a run with no walk breaks, but feel like I'm getting closer.

Another Successful Outing
Today was nicer, in the 50s and a light NW breeze. I ran 4 miles again, this time in the .85, .9, .9, and .85 succession. A couple of those miles were in the 10:30 range, including the walking part, and I felt the strongest yet in my journey to recovery. I didn't feel like I was running too fast, although at one point up a slight hill in the second mile I felt like I was doing my old routine of attacking hills. It was a good feeling.

Tape and Run
I used the KT tape today (again) and it seemed to help, especially since today was a little tougher with cold, sprinkles, and wind. I went the 4-mile route and succesively ran .85, .85, .9, and .65 + .25 in the last one for a total of 3.5. I'm still feeling pretty good but as always, tomorrow will be the real test. Not sure I'm up yet to running the route without stopping, but hoping the tenderness continues to decline over the next few weeks.

Doing More
Today was Texas cold, in the low 40s or upper 30s and wind chill in the low 20s, but in the afternoon it was sunny. I went out before 4 o'clock and even though the wind from the north was stiff I still got in my 4 miles and with a .8 mile tally for each mile plus a little extra made it to 3.25 overall. Not bad as I continue to build up the mileage. KT Tape is my friend and pending how I feel in the morning I'm hoping to get to 3.5 on Saturday.

Upping It
No pain after Sunday's run, so today I decided to up the running. I still went 4 miles, but I ran 3/4 mile and walked 1/4 each mile, for a total of 3 miles running. We'll see how this feels tomorrow.

Super Run
Today is Super Bowl Sunday, a day on which I refuse to watch football. People and their politics have ruined professional football for me, so I find it better just to avoid altogether. Well, they've ruined many other things, too, but I'll leave it at that.
After Thursday's outing my abdomen didn't hurt but I would describe the feeling as "tender". So The Wife and I walked yesterday, and then I felt well enough today to do the run half-mile/walk half-mile routine over the course of 4 miles. The temperature was about 70 degrees and actually made me sweat. My hair is the longest it's been in about twenty years and if I'd had clippers with me I probably would have cut it all of by mile three. I didn't, and my longer hair lives on for a few more days.

Getting There
Today was another cool day, but not as bad as the "Polar Vortex" up north. Plus I just got back from a work trip for the last five days and needed the exercise. The last two days I've had no pain at all, not even when I turn over in my bed or walk up stairs. Today I started out running a half-mile and then walking the other half, which I repeated over the course of 4 miles. Still feel good afterward and hoping for the same tomorrow.

Another Cold Outing
It's been Texas cold here lately, which means the temperature has been in the 20s at night and highs in the 40s during the day. Today was sunny and rose into the upper 40s, so I decided I should take the opportunity to get out before I head out of town this weekend. I did the same routine as last weekend (after which I felt no pain, fortunately) and felt pretty good today as well. 4 miles total, and hopefully in the next week or two I can start running again regularly.

First Run
Well I did it. I've been doing lots of walking the past week-plus, and today I decided to try a little running in the mix. I walked five days in a row last week before the temperature plummeted and wind went crazy, several times up to an hour and close to four miles. My side has felt much better, and a couple of times recently I woke up with no pain at all. One good tell was that for weeks I could feel the strain every time I turned over in bed, and lately that has not been the case. So I thought it was time to give running a try. This is the longest I've been without a run in over fifteen years, and frankly it's been way too long.
I walked a half-mile, ran a half-mile, repeated, and then ran from the 2.5 marker to 3.5 since the last half-mile is up the big hill and I did not want to run that on the first day back. Through the run I felt just fine, albeit slow, and right now I feel okay. The verdict will be how it feels tomorrow. If everything is good I will walk again, and then the day after that mix in some running again. I'm going to take this slow if everything goes well. If not then I'll just have to keep walking. Today the temperature was about 40 degrees and fortunately not too breezy, with plenty of sun. It really was a good day for a run, and looking forward with hope to more in the coming days.

Still Walking
I'm still sidelined and walking when the weather cooperates. The pain in my side is mostly gone, although it still shows up when I sneeze or cough. I'm doing my best to not re-injure it by doing something stupid, like lifting or pulling something too heavy. I walked yesterday for almost an hour and probably covered close to 4 miles, and I'll walk again this afternoon. My guess is that I'm still a couple of weeks away from running again. I've put on a few pounds and am up to 160 for the first time in a couple of years. That's as much due to my eating too much over the holidays as it is to lack of running. Time to get that under control in the new year.
